The tragic deaths of Arthur Labinjo-Hughes and Star Hobson at the close of 2021 highlighted the importance of making child safeguarding a national priority. From growing reports of sexual abuse, to rising levels of criminal exploitation and online grooming, children are increasingly at risk of suffering significant harm, according to the NSPCC. Recent updates to the Government’s statutory child safeguarding guidance and to the Online Safety Bill reflect expanded efforts to tackle these concerns. Across the country, local authorities, police, healthcare services, schools and charities have also been working in tandem to prevent child abuse and improve outcomes for children. Now is the time to come together and share best practice in delivering multi-agency, local solutions to protect children and improving safeguarding practices.

  • The Department for Education reported that in 2020/21, over 12,700 children in England were identified as being at risk of criminal exploitation by gangs
  • The NCA estimate that there are around 700,000 UK individuals posing varying degrees of sexual risk to children and state there were over 24,800 child abuse offences reported in 2020/21
  • The latest figures from the Internet Watch Foundation found that in 2021, over 252,000 URLs contained images of children suffering sexual abuse
  • Youth homelessness has risen by 40% in the last 5 years, according to Centrepoint
